TEFCO vol.3 - Toward Redevelopment of Seawater Pumped-Storage Power Plant

TEFCO (Tokyo Electricity Farming Community) is a project that aims to rethink electricity as an infrastructure indispensable to our lives and to foster and cultivate electrical literacy among all through the creation of power generation/storage devices and the sharing of electricity generated in the exhibition space.
Launched in the summer of 2023, this project has twice produced gravity-powered devices, which are currently attracting attention as a method of generating and preserving renewable energy and have been exhibited at galleries and museums.
This time, TEFCO will work on the creation of a pumped storage power generation device, thinking about the world's first seawater pumped-storage power plant, the Okinawa Yanbaru Seawater Pumped-Storage Power Plant, which is already out of operation. Now that the accident situation at the Shiga Nuclear Power Plant caused by the Noto Peninsula earthquake on January 1, 2024, is becoming clear, inefficient in-house power generation will provoke a rethinking of energy issues.
