大阪府出身の陶芸家。沖縄県立芸術大学を卒業後、京都府立陶工訓練校にて陶芸を学ぶ。清水焼の窯元にて勤務したのち、読谷山焼北窯「米司工房」にて従事。2013年、大宜味村にて独立。昔ながらの「蹴りろくろ」を使い、大宜味の共同窯「九連窯」にて作陶する。

菅原氏の作品を見ると、「伝統的な技法の積み重ねの中で生まれる新しさ」が伝わってくるようです。オススメは「タラフ」と呼ばれる蓋つきの小物入れ。梅干しや漬物、黒糖などを入れるのにぴったり。遊び心いっぱいのドット柄や、魚文などの沖縄ならではの柄も特徴的です。

PROFILE

Ken Sugawara is the potter from Osaka. He graduated the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, then learned pottery at Kyoto Prefectural Training School of Pottery. After working for a pottery studio of Kiyomizu-yaki (Kiyomizu Pottery), he moved to Okinawa. He worked for the pottery studio “Yoneshi Koubou” where they create Yomitan-yaki or Yomitan Yama-yaki (Yomitan Pottery). In 2013, he became an independent artist in Ogimi village. Using a traditional kicking pottery wheel, he creates wares at the communal bank kiln “Kyuren-gama” in Ogimi.

Sugawara’s works could show “the novilty that is born of the traditional technic accumulation.” Our recommendation is “Tarafu,” a small vessel with a lid. Tarafus are suitable for containing umeboshi (salted Japanese plums), pickles, brown sugar, etc. Playful dot pattern or Okinawan-special Gyomon (the marking of fish) show his works’ uniqueness.
